We lost our power from Sunday at 7am until Wednesday at 4:20pm. The night before we lost power, I put together on top of the kitchen table 4 oil lamps, 4 flashlights, candles, and matches. I saved some water filling up 3 buckets and about 20 empty 2 liter Coke bottles from my recycling bin. Mu husband had 3 coolers in the garage filled with ice. This latest experience reminded me when I was young. I grew up with this way of life in a third world country. We had to eat dinner before dark. We had to read using candlelight or lamps then go to bed at 8pm. As my son said, since we couldn’t use internet, TV, and phones (although cell phones were available on a limited basis as we tried to conserve battery life), family bonding was at its best during these times. Family members got together in one room and had lots of stories to tell. Thousands of households lost power and took days and even weeks before it was restored. Some friends who did not lose power called us and offerred their homes and even their refrigerators/freezers to store some of our food to prevent spoiling.

The cost of damage in Milford left by Irene is in the millions of dollars, but at least not one human life was taken here. Once again, the city of Milford got together to help each other in time of need. Local and state government agencies, FEMA representatives, social services, the American Red Cross, insurance adjusters, relatives, friends, and neighbors acted swiftly to help those who were affected. As a Realtor, I got a lot of calls and emails from renters who lost their homes from the hurricane. My heart and prayers go out to those who lost their homes and belongings.

I’m really proud to be a citizen of Milford, the Small City with a Big Heart.

As many of you from around here know, it’s that time of year again. Tonight, Friday, August 19, from 6:00PM-9:30PM and tomorrow, Saturday, from 10AM-6PM is the 2011 Milford Oyster Festival.

There are many activities for the whole family at the 37th Annual Milford Oyster Festival. The band playing this year is the Marshall Tucker Band. There seems to be a general trend with the bands that play at the festival, such as Foghat in 2008 and Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes in 2005. Mostly classic rock

It seems like Plan B Burger did something like that with their training/orientation in Orange a few days ago, yet to another level. I like the idea of these unconventional interview processes and their emphasis on teamwork.

Honestly, I’ve never had a Plan B Burger before, but just reading about them makes them quite tempting. Once in a while, I love to indulge in a nice, juicy 5 Guys Burger, so I’m really curious as to how these burgers compare.

Also, it makes me happy seeing more of these local restaurants showing up in Milford. It means more jobs for people in the area and it’s another place where locals can put money back into our economy. I really hope for the success of Plan B Burger and other local restaurants. That Milford Crossing shopping center has come a long way in recent years. I’m looking forward to how that upper scale strip mall develops. While it’s not something like the “Americana” found in Port Washington, New York, it’s definitely a breath of fresh air for shoppers in Milford and the surrounding area.

When this Plan B Burger Bar opens on July 11th, I’m sure a lot of people will be flooding the shopping center to see what this place is all about. I’m quite curious myself

Once again, I apologize for the lack of updates here. I’ll try my best to ramp things up for my readers.

Around 7pm today, I was meeting with a client with mine at the office, and I had to park in the gravel lot by Scoopy Doo’s. Our usual Prudential spots by our Schooner Lane office were taken up by people dining and drinking at Cabo. I can’t blame them as their Mexican food is absolutely delicious there.

Sure, I had to park across the street, but it’s good to see the downtown area alive and well like this. Even this early on a Friday night, parking was hard to come by. Usually, you don’t experience this until around 9:30 or 10:00pm at night.

Earlier today, my son took pictures of the Milford boardwalk many people have been reading about here on my blog. From what I’ve seen so far, the pictures are looking great. Expect some in the coming blog entries.

Also, the next time he gets a chance to wake up early and shoot, he’ll take pictures of downtown Milford and other areas of our small city with a big heart. The weather is absolutely beautiful out. More and more people are going to the beach, barbequing outdoors, and just taking advantage of all that Mother Nature has to offer.

Earlier today, President Barack Obama spoke at the US Coast Guard Academy graduation, delivering his final commencement address of the season. In New London, Connecticut, there were 229 cadets in the graduating class of 2011.

The President stressed the importance of their role as one of the nation’s first responders. Their service in recent years include evacuating citizens of lower Manhattan during 9/11, assisting with both the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and the earthquake in Haiti, and also bringing Americans to higher ground as their areas were destroyed by the Mississippi River.

Here’s an excerpt from his commencement addresss:

“Around the world we need you to partner with other nations to secure their ports, protect the vital shipping lanes of the Persian Gulf, combat piracy off the horn of Africa and help train foreign partners from the Americas to Africa to Asia…Here at home we need you to stop those smugglers, and protect our oceans and prevent terrorists from slipping deadly weapons into our ports.”

The landing of Air Force One at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, CT, however, didn’t go as smoothly. Due to the rainy weather, the President’s plane had to do a “go-around” and make a second attempt as landing with poor visibility of the landing strip.

After the graduation at the US Coast Guard Academy, President Obama hopped back on Air Force One to fly to Boston where he is to speak at two fundraisers. Current Celtics 3 point ace and former UConn star, Ray Allen, is said to make an appearance at one of these receptions to show his support for Obama, who is an enthusiastic basketball fan.

It’s really great to see the President of the United States come to our state, even for just a little bit. No matter who our President is, there’s just that special feeling you get when he (or she) comes to your area. It’s not like with a celebrity. Rather, it’s like a much bigger, more important feeling. I don’t know…that’s just me haha.

Also, just hearing of all these commencement addresses by important individuals reminds me of my son’s graduation about a year ago. How time flies! That feeling you get when you son or daughter reaches that point in your life – you feel proud of both your kid and yourself. It was some journey, and for both you and your kids, it’s only the beginning of their future.
